Ten ice-sheet models are used to study sensitivity of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to prescribed changes of surface mass balance, sub-ice-shelf melting and basal sliding. Results exhibit a large range in projected contributions to sea-level change. In most cases, the ice volume above flotation lost is linearly dependent on the strength of the forcing. Combinations of forcings can be closely approximated by linearly summing the contributions from single forcing experiments, suggesting that nonlinear feedbacks are modest. Our models indicate that Greenland is more sensitive than Antarctica to likely atmospheric changes in temperature and precipitation, while Antarctica is more sensitive to increased ice-shelf basal melting. An experiment approximating the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s RCP8.5 scenario produces additional first-century contributions to sea level of 22.3 and 8.1 cm from Greenland and Antarctica, respectively, with a range among models of 62 and 14 cm, respectively. By 200 years, projections increase to 53.2 and 26.7 cm, respectively, with ranges of 79 and 43 cm. Linear interpolation of the sensitivity results closely approximates these projections, revealing the relative contributions of the individual forcings on the combined volume change and suggesting that total ice-sheet response to complicated forcings over 200 years can be linearized.

Summary
Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics are fields which show how the genetic make-up of an individual can influence drugs effects. Genetic polymorphisms can influence antiepileptic drug (AED) responses and, during polytherapy, their interaction profile by influencing metabolism, central nervous system penetration, pharmacodynamics and adverse events. This chapter considers the evidence for each of these and reviews the uses and pitfalls of genetic screening. The point of action for AEDs is the brain, and so AEDs have to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier. GABAA receptors are the target for a number of AEDs since alterations in GABAA receptor-mediated transmission have been implicated in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. The predictive value of a pharmacogenetic test can be viewed from a genetic epidemiological perspective. Clinical and cost effectiveness of pharmacogenetic tests may need to be established in prospective randomized trials and their use may require new professional standards of testing and test interpretation.

Summary
Introduction
The demographic history of the Chumash Indians who lived in the Santa Barbara Channel area of southern California is better documented than that of almost any other North American Indian population. An exceptionally complete archeological record makes it possible to chart population growth and changing settlement patterns during the long prehistory of this area. More importantly from the perspective of this book, an extraordinarily complete set of ecclesiastical records survives that allows the demographic consequences that European contact had for the Chumash to be studied in great detail.
A key element of Spanish colonial policy was removal of the Chumash from their native villages to mission communities where priests could give them religious instruction and vocational training. In addition to providing the local Indians with the perceived benefits of Christianity, this colonial strategy strengthened Spain's grasp on the northern borderlands of its New World holdings. These religious and political goals were pursued using Indian laborers to build a series of missions and garrisoned forts at strategic locations along the California coast (Fig. 4.1). Spain viewed these bastions of its colonial presence as essential for preventing other nations, especially Russia, from seizing control of Alta California. To measure the success of their proselytizing efforts, the priests at each mission were required to keep careful records of births, deaths, baptisms, marriages, and other important events in the lives of the neophytes (baptized Indian people) under their control. This was a task most of them performed both conscientiously and with considerable zeal.

MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of STars / Microvariabilite et Oscillations STellaire) is a Canadian microsatellite mission intended to detect rapid photometric oscillations at the μmag level in stars brighter than V ∼ 6. This limit is set primarily by the 15-cm aperture of the MOST telescope. The small size and mass of the MOST bus (similar to a suitcase) sets a limit on the pointing accuracy of about ±10 arcsec. To achieve the required photometric precision under these conditions, the MOST focal plane features a set of Fabry microlenses which can spread the target starlight into a pupil image of the telescope onto a CCD. The large size (∼1600 pixels) and positional stability (±0.1 pixel) of these images makes MOST insensitive to CCD flat-fielding errors. MOST is currently on schedule to be launched in early 2002.

Deuteron magnetic resonance (DMR) has been used to further examine hydrogen (deuteron) populations in amorphous-silicon (a-Si) and in n-type crystalline silicon (x-Si). In both a-Si and x-Si DMR shows central components arising at least in part from isolated molecular deuterium and sharp doublet features from Si-bonded hydrogen (D). Our new results include the observation in x-Si of molecule-specific DMR multiple echoes from trapped ortho-D2. A second new result is the observation in x-Si of a substantialn Si-bonded D population with splittings between 46 and 80 kHz and perhaps arising from (deuterated) hydrogen bond-centered and antibonding configurations.

We report deuteron magnetic resonance (DMR) measurements on aged deuterium-implanted single crystal n-type silicon and comparisons with amorphous silicon spectra. The sample film was prepared six years ago by deuteration from a-D2 plasma and evaluated by a variety of experimental methods. Deuterium has been evolving with time and the present DMR signal shows a smaller deuteron population. A doublet from Si-D configurations along 〈111〉 has decreased more than have central molecular DMR components, which include 47 and 12 kHz FWHM gaussiane. Transient DMR magnetization recoveries indicate spin lattice relaxation to para-D2 relaxation centers.

Results are presented on the properties of a-Si:H thin films deposited with a remote hydrogen plasma. An essential feature of the reactor design is the use of an alumina (rather than quartz) tube to contain the hydrogen plasma for low oxygen contamination of the films. High doping efficiency is demonstrated for both P-and B-doped amorphous films, and the effects of high silane dilution and deposition temperature are illustrated with P-doped amorphous and microcrystalline silicon films.
